Discover the wild east – Leipzig About 150 km south of Berlin and 100 km northwest of Dresden: The second biggest city in Eastern Germany – the first choice to visit! “Leipzig has always been among the most dynamic of German cities” , as the oldest exhibition city worldwide, its trade fairs have a tradition back to the Middle Ages and always remained. Leipzig is internationally known for its large artistic and cultural offerings as well as its university - 30.000 students keep the city lively – it is also synonymous for it´s leading role in the peaceful political revolution in ´89. The city centre, though small size, is bursting with energy and style. Packed with museums and monuments to Bach, cafes and university buildings, used clothing stores and bars, Leipzig´s appeal can be felt from almost every angle! The influence that residents like Bach, Nietzsche, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Leibniz and Goethe have had on world culture has always given Leipzigers a certain cosmopolitan flair, and today the city is at the top of its game. In Goethe´s ´Faust´ a character named Frosch calls Leipzig “a little Paris”. He was wrong – Leipzig is more fun. You can reach Leipzig by plane , by train from Prague, Berlin, Dresden, Weimar and all major cities ( the visitor will arrive at “Hauptbahnhof” - the biggest main line station in europe with a shopping centre covering 3 floors ) and by Autobahn A14 and A9. What you need to see in Leipzig: The monument to the Battle of Nations, the main landmark - climb the steps and enjoy the view! Nikolaikirche ( St. Nikolai Church ) – where the GDR revolution started in ´89 Stasimuseum ( Museum in the Round Corner ) – the secret service of the GDR Egyptian Museum and Museum der Bildenden Künste (fine Art) Johann Sebastian Bach Museum & monument, St. Thomas church The Gewandhaus, home of the world famous Gewandhaus Orchestra and The Opera at Augustusplatz, the biggest square of all german cities Leipzig´s historic shopping arcades from centuries ago – the most famous is Mädlerpassage (“…despite the claims of Sydney´s Queen Victoria Building it is the most beautiful shopping centre in the world…”-lonely planet) with Auerbach´s Keller – parts of Goethe´s “Faust” took place there! The spacious Zoo with the largest Monkey-indoor area in the world “The sharp tooth” tower – built as a book standing upright, it is the tallest building in town, an elevator takes you to the 29 th floor and from the roof there is an amazing view over both the city and it´s surrounding! Altes Rathaus (with the longest inscription to be found on any building in the world) and Neues Rathaus (Cityhall in Castle style) The green belt surrounding the city with parks, waterways and woodlands makes it the 3 rd greenest city in Germany Where you go at night : Moritzbastei: medieval tunnels, multi-level dance floors, brick ceilings – a must Werk II: large cultural centre to suit all tastes; Tangofabrik: old factory halls with styles for pleasure Strips: Gottschedstrasse (around the corner from Sleepy Lion Hostel) with bars, restaurants, theaters Barfussgässchen: similar strip, next to the ´Markt´ (main market square) Südvorstadt + Connewitz: alternative strip with extraordinary flair, unusual clubs, theaters with tough art-house film types… Nachtcafe: 2 floors surrounding an elevator shaft, 3 different kinds of music Ilses Erika: Currently the most popular cellar club in Leipzig with crazy shows & Brit Pop, independent music Special: “Honky Tonk” – Europe´s biggest Bar Festival
